Пасечко Елена Михайловна,
If you look at a large map of Russia you will see this tiny dot - the city of Novokuznetsk in Siberia. It was founded in 1618 as a fortress on the Tom River and was called Kuznetsk. In 1932 the sleepy town was renovated due to the building of Kuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant. It was the plant that mostly predetermined the future development of the city, known as Stalinsk between 1932-1961. It contributed greatly into the victory in the Great Patriotic War and was awarded 3 orders for the labour heroism: the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of Kutuzov of the first degree. In the 60s the newly built West Siberian Steel Works became one of the large-scale iron and steel enterprises of Russia.
But it would be a delusion to think that it is only industry that matters in Novokuznetsk. There is much more that distinguishes the city from any other Siberian city: in 1931 it was the first city in the distance from the Urals to the Far East where the first tram run with electricity was used. Soon the Siberian Metallurgical Institute was founded. In 1933 the city Drama Theatre was opened. In 1935 the first in Western Siberia sound cinema ‘Communar’ invited its audience. In 1959 Novokuznetsk Planetarium was founded and it is still unique for the large area between the Urals and the Far East. Novokuznetsk Circus is one of the best circuses in Russia.
Today Novokuznetsk is a modern, developing city with the population of about half a million people, with the gardens in blossom praised by V.Mayakovsky. It is a large cultural and educational center of Siberia and has recently been recognized as one of the 10 major industrial centres of Russia.
So this ‘tiny dot’ on the map of Russia is not so tiny in sense of the importance of the city and its people for the country.
