Тhe Moscow subway
CАРКИСОВ ИВАН ВЛАДИМИРОВИЧ.
I am a student of Educational Center №1828 “Saburovo” and study at 11 class.
I would like to tell you about one of the most interesting landmarks of Moscow – Moscow subway. It is not only a means of transportation for many people, but it is one of the fastest and may be the most beautiful subway in the world.
The Moscow subway has a long history. The people started discussing the need for a subway in Moscow since 1875. In 1913 the government developed a construction plan, but it was not realized because of the First World War.
The first line with 13 stations was inaugurated only on May 15th, 1935. Since then the Moscow subway has been working for 77 years all the time except for only one day: the 16-th of October 1941. This was the most difficult day of the Moscow battle and Stalin decided to destroy the subway so that the fascists could not use it in their interests. But this order was abrogated and during the war subway was also used as a bomb shelter.
The today’s Moscow subway has 185 stations. 184 of them are located in Moscow and one (Miakinino) - in the Moskovskaya oblast. All the stations have a different architecture and located at different levels: some below and some on the ground.
44 stations of the Moscow subway are regarded as cultural heritage sites. They contain the marvelous examples of soviet architecture. In some instances the stones used for construction contain the fossils and other pre historic remains.
Moscow subway has 6 bridges across Moscow and Yauza rivers with quite interesting architecture. It also has the two “phantom” stations, which have been built, but are no longer being used. Moscow subway is the world of its own and people have many stories to tell, both funny and tragic, about Moscow subway.
I like Moscow subway and think that it is a remarkable landmark of my city.
