Hello! Our names are Nikita, Sophia and Varvara Malevich. We are a big friendly family. Our father is a priest. We often visit different monasteries in Moscow. Now we want to tell you about one of the most beautiful stone constructions in Moscow – the Andronikov Monastery. It is situated on the left bank of the Yauza River, consecrated to the Holy Image of Savior Not Made by Hands.
The Andronikov Monastery was established in 1357 by Metropolitan Alexis. Its first hegumen was Saint Andronik, one of Sergii Radonezhsky’s disciples. The extant four-pillared Saviour Cathedral was constructed from 1420–1427.
The name of the monastery is associated with the outstanding Russian icon painter Andrei Rublev, the founder of the Moscow school of arts. In the course of the restoration of the Savior Cathedral small pieces of Rublev’s frescoes were discovered. Andrei Rublev lived in the monastery and died there. He was burried in the cemetery adjoining the monastery land. The Andronikov Monastery is home to Andrei Rublev Museum of Old Russian Art, named after the most famous monk of this abbey. At the entrance to the monastery you can see a monument to Andrei Rublev.
