The Village of Ostafyevo is situated near Moscow. The estate “Ostafyevo”, one of the beautiful architectural and landscape ensembles of the classicism age, is situated here.
A two-storeyed stone palace is situated in the middle of a picturesque park. It is connected with the wings by colonnade galleries. The palace is surrounded by symmetric alleys, a big meadow and a pond.
In the XIX century the estate Ostafyevo was one of the centres of Russian culture. Here N.M. Karamzin wrote seven volumes of "History of the Russian State". The poet P.A. Vyazemsky, the owner of the Ostafyevo, received Zhukovsky, Baratynsky, Gogol, Batyushkov, Mitskevich and Dmitriev here. A. S. Pushkin was here in 1830 and 1831 and named so amazingly the Ostafyevo alley “Russian Parnassus”.
Pavel Petrovich, the only son of P.A. Vyazemsky, continued the Ostafyevo historic and literary traditions. He finished the formation of the Ostafyevo library. He turned the Ostafyevo into house-museum. Small Pushkin museum was established on the second floor.
The last owner of Ostafyevo was Count S.D. Sheremetev. He realized the originality and cultural value of Ostafyevo. In 1899, in the year of Pushkin's 100th anniversary, he proclaimed Ostafievo to be public museum. In 1911, to celebrate 100th anniversary of the publication of "Notes about Ancient and Modern History" monument of N.M. Karamzin was erected in the park, and in 1913 monuments of A.S. Pushkin, V.A. Zhukovsky, P.A. Vyazemsky were also erected.
Since then the Ostafyevo changed many owners. In 1989 the Council of Ministers of the USSR passed decision to organize a museum in Ostafyevo. Traditional festivals of poetry are annually held in Ostafyevo to mark Pushkin's birthday. Literary and folk festivals take place on the territory of the museum.
