Lukoyanov is a small Russian town located 173 kilometers southeast of Nizhny Novgorod. It has population of 15 thousands. Its history goes back to the 16th century and is closely connected with the names of some famous people who we are proud of. The first person is a mordvinian man called Ivashka Lukoyanov who built a mill on the river Tyosha and who is considered to be a founder of a settlement. In 1779 Lukoyanov became a town by order of Ekaterina 2.
There were not enough water reservoirs in the town that’s why it was very often damaged by fires. In 1817 a severe fire demolished Lukoyanov. In the 30th of the 19th century while being in Boldino A.S. Pushkin visited Lukoyanov and mentioned this fact in his unfinished work “The History of Settlement Goryukhino”. During his visits to Boldino the poet was in Lukoyanov several times and there are historical places that are associated with his name such as the house of Ageev, the house of merchant Syromyatnikov, one of the oldest streets of the town- now it is named after A. S. Pushkin. In 1891 and 1892 a lot of people of Povolzhie including the inhabitants of Lukoyanov faced severe famine. A famous Russian writer V.G.Korolenko described the life of people in Lukoyanov during these years in his essay “In the year of famine.” Korolenko took part in opening 60 canteens for dying of starvation people. A few years later V.G. Korolenko donated money and books for the first public library in Lukoyanov.
The last person we would like to mention is Patriarch Kirill whose relatives lived in Lukoyanov in the first half of the 20th century. In 2010 he visited our native place. It was really a remarkable event in the history of the town. All the inhabitants of Lukoyanov benefited considerably from the visit. Firstly, the church was built in the centre of the town. Secondly, the central part of Lukoyanov was reconstructed and decorated. Finally, it was a holiday that made people believe in better future.
