The Yamal Peninsula is located in Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District of northwest Siberia. "Yamal" means "End of the World". The Peninsula is one of the coldest sites in the world. It is the world's best-preserved example of local reindeer-breeders in the most northern part of Siberia. I have been living here since the date of my birth. And the Khanty and Mansi are the main aboriginal people of my native land. But now the people of the north occupy only a small part of Yamal territory. Every year they are getting less and less. But I really care about the destiny of this nation. The Khanty and Mansi peoples are engaged in hunting and fishing, some of them are herds. Reindeer-breeder day is one of the most respectful traditions of native people. It’s celebrated every year at the end of March when deer-herds can relax performing their national songs, testing their strength in traditional northern contests. Each year this event is held in different towns. And a great number of people attend this holiday with great pleasure. Cold compresses the branchy mouth of the Ob River and turns it into a boundless white plain, where all the Nenets meet. Women in green and blue robes decorated with ornaments, drag sleeping children on a sledge. Men dressed in their beautifully decorated clothes and special leather shoes get ready for traditional competitions. This is the time, when the Nenets gather from all corners of the Yamal Peninsula and exchange news competing in speed reindeer sledge running. We should respect the indigenous people of the north. We need to take care of their cultural heritage. Our goal is to be able to preserve traditions and customs of local people and transfer them to future generations. If we don’t, who will take care of this small people?
