Komsomolsk-on-Amur was founded in 1932 and is situated on the left bank of the Amur river in a valley with a picturesque landscape and favourable geological and engineering conditions, 270 kilometers north of Khabarovsk. As a result of its advantageous geographic location at the intersection of the Trans-Siberian railroad and the Baikal-Amur mainline, the city is a center for the most important transportation lines which connect the regions of Russia farther inland with the countries of the Pacific Rin.
