English people say: “East or West, home is best”. I like my town very much. I think it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Taganrog is the town in Rostov Region. It was founded by Peter I in 1698. It is famous all over the world as Motherland of the great Russian writer A. P. Chekhov. The heart of Taganrog is its centre. It is the oldest part of Taganrog. There are a lot of beautiful old mansions, monuments and museums there. Citizens and guests of the town with great pleasure visit one of the oldest theatres in Russia – theatre by A. P. Chekov, Durov’s house, Gorky park, Chekhov library. A walk along the old, historical part of the town rich in beautiful examples of the town architecture of the 19 century may be very pleasant and enjoying. I’d like to tell you about one of these examples – Alferaki Palace.
It was built in baroque architectonic under design of architect Andrei Stackenschneider in 1848. The building is decorated with four Corinthian columns. There is a spacious music hall with a ceiling –painting. Originally it was the home of the wealthy merchant Nikolai Alferaki and his family. In the 1870 the Alferaki family went bankrupt . The Greek merchant Negroponte bought the palace and became its owner. The mansion has a very interesting history. It was the head quarters of the Soviet worker council of Taganrog. Later it housed the German war hospital. After 1927 it housed the Museum of Regional Studies. After renovation in 1991-1996 the building is open to public as the Museum of Regional Studies. The Municipality often uses the spacious hall for official ceremonies. The museum collections incude authentic personal belongings of the Russian tsars Alexander I of Russia and Peter I of Russia.
