The anniversary of Kirov district of Saint-Petersburg
Лядова Галина Александровна
This year Kirov district is celebrating its 95th anniversary. Before 1917 the territory of the district was the suburb of Saint-Petersburg. It started as a part of Moskovsko-Narvsky district in Petrograd. Then Narvsky district was separated from Moskovsky and enlarged at the expense of neighbouring territories. On 17th December in 1934 Kirov district got its name after the assassinated functionary of the Communist party, Sergey Kirov. There are a lot of great sights in Kirov district. You can see the palaces of the 18th century; they remind us that this territory had been built with the gorgeous suburban palaces until the end of the 19th century. The buildings of the 19th century were few; they were mostly rented apartment houses. The Kirov (former Putilov) plant has been the heart and the soul of the district for about 150 years. It has been one of the most important enterprises in Russia manufacturing railway rails, tractors and other machinery. A lot of buildings were constructed for the workers of the plant. Several blocks have been called “the Kirov block”. They were built in the style of constructivism. Looking modest and plain constructivist buildings are appreciated highly for extravagant design and remarkable forms. The Gaza House of Culture was built for the workers of Kirov plant to engage in amateur performances, sports and other leisure activities.
Kirov district was the front line during the siege of Leningrad and the names of its streets (Oboronnaja, Avangardnaja) keep the memory of The Great Patriotic War.
Kirov district is my birthplace and I feel proud of its past, present and future.
