I would like to tell you about the «New Holland». It is an artificial island in the delta of the Neva River in St. Petersburg. The island has a triangular shape. «New Holland» is the only one among 42 city’s islands which was created by people.
Peter the Great named the island «New Holland» because «Holland» was a place in St. Petersburg, where there was a storehouse of lumber for shipbuilding. Afterwards people moved this storehouse to the island between Kryukov Canal and Admiralty Canal. The island took its name «New Holland». Originally the storehouse was wooden. In 1765 Savva Chevakinsky was ordered to rebuild the storehouses in brick but without the customary stucco decoration. In 1788 Villen de la Mothe designed the facades for the storehouses. He created the New Holland Arch. It is one of the most famous attractions of the complex. The length of the arch is 23 meters and length of the span is 8 meters.
In 1915 there was a high-powered radio station, which signal was strong enough to reach the fleets in the Baltic and the Black seas. New Holland was seriously damaged by artillery fire during the World War II and the blockade of Leningrad.
Nowadays the island isn’t under the control of the navy. In 2006 there was a competition for the reconstruction of New Holland. Norman Foster’s project won. Now it is underway under the control of Roman Abramovich. After 300 years «New Holland» has opened to the public. But you can visit it only in summer!
