Library A. Aalto
Федотов Тимофей Антонович
My native town is Vyborg. It is over 7 centuries old as it was founded in 1293. It is very beautiful and rich in history. It has a lot of historical buildings which attract crowds of tourists. One of such houses is Vyborg library. It was built by a famous Finnish architect A. Aalto.
His design won a competition in 1927 and the library was built in 1930-1935. It is a remarkable example of functional style. The building is amazing and unique. A. Aalto made 57round “windows” on the roof. Sunlight comes through these “windows” and produces shadow-free natural light for reading . Unique is the ceiling in the lecture hall. It looks like a wave and creates good acoustics. Specialists say that is a kind of a signature of the architect because his surname Aalto means “a wave” in Finnish.
Aalto library in Vyborg is important in cultural life of Vyborg. A lot of lectures, meetings with famous people, lectures and concerts take place here. The house has become a home of knowledge and social life. Also, it is one of the few buildings that have had a significant influence on modern architecture worldwide. It is one of my favourite places in Vyborg.
