Cheboksary, the Holy Trinity Monastery
Крикова Людмила Петровна
There are places which are the dearest to your heart. I’d like to tell you about one of them - Cheboksary Holy Trinity Monastery. Just one step inside and you find yourself in some different world, its peace and inner beauty fills your soul with truth and serenity.
Cheboksary Holy Trinity Monastery was founded by a decree of Ivan IV the Terrible in 1566 after Russia had conquered Kazan Khanate. One of the famous father-superiors of the monastery was Archimandrite Ioannikiy, who headed the monastery since 1582. He was the one who in 1601 admitted Mary Shestova, exiled grandmother of the first Russian Tsar of the House of Romanov, to monastic vows. She lived in Cheboksary St. Nicholas convent, and was buried there. In 1767 Russian Empress Catherine II was travelling on the Volga River and visited the monastery.
In 1924 godless Soviet rule closed the monastery. Soviet culture institutions had been occupying the monastery buildings for many years till 1990. Only in 1993 the reestablishment of the monastery began. Twice, in 1996 and 2001, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II visited the monastery on his trip to Cheboksary-Chuvashia Eparchy. Since 1993 the monastery was headed by Igumen Savvatiy (Antonov), who acquired the rank of Archimandrite in 1996 and became Bishop of Alatyr in 2005. Now he is Bishop of Ulan-Ude and Buryatia Eparchy. Since December 2009, Archimandrite Vasiliy (Pasquiet ) has been Father Superior of the monastery.
Trinity Cathedral of Monastery has several particles of holy relics. There is a revered Iberian Icon of Mother of God (XVII century), the miracle-working carved sculpture-icon of St. Nicholay Mozhaiskiy (XVI century), the icon of Saint Panteleimon with a particle of the holy relic (1912).
