We live and study in Angarsk, Irkutsk region. Our native town is 120 kms from Lake Baikal. There is the most popular place Listvyanka.We visit this village very often. That is why we want tell about this wonderful place. Listvyanka is located to the southwest of Lake Baikal near the source of the Angara. The village stretches in an arc along the coast at the foot of a high stony ridge.
Russian pioneers came to this place in the middle of the 17th century, and a hundred years later there was a stage-post here. The settlement grew along with the development of navigation on Lake Baikal. Listvyanka is now a small, but very comfortable place to stay. Many hotels offer good meals, Russian steam-sauna (banya), day-trips.
In summer, you can walk along the shore of Baikal (to the north), there's a path through the hills, and it is very nice. On the top of the one of mountain there is the stone Chersky. In winter many people come here to drive on the sledge or skiing from this mountain. On the road to Listvyanka there's Shaman-rock, sneaking out of Angara river, it is considered to be a sacred stone. The standard must-sees are Limnological Museum (or Museum of Baikal), where you can learn about flora and fauna of the lake and see some unique species in aquarium.
The aquarium with Baikal endemic seal 'Nerpa' now is situated right at the Baikal museum. There you can see a funny show. Seals can dance, sing, play with ball and draw very beautiful pictures! The other place called fish or souvenirs market is situated at the end of Listvyanka.
