Михайленкова Елена 10 класс
My name is Alena Mikhailenkova. I am 15 years old. I live in Novorossiysk and I want to tell you about a great place called 'Malaya Zemlya'.
A small unit of Soviet sailors and soldiers defended one part of Novorossiysk, known as Malaya Zemlya, for 225 days beginning on February 4, 1943, until it was liberated by the Red Army on September 16, 1943. This heroic defense allowed the Soviets to retain possession of the city's bay, which prevented the Germans from using the port for supply shipments. As a result, Novorossiysk was awarded the title Hero City in 1973. To immortalize the heroic deed the monument Malaya Zemlya was created.
It is erected on the shore of the sea. ‘Malaya land’ represents two reinforced concrete massifs, connected in form of triangle, as if forming a giant landing vessel, moving to the aim.
On the walls of the monument there are names of military units, notable in the Novorossiysk epopee, and names of participants of battles. At the bottom of the memorial there is eternal flame. In the symbolic ship there is the Museum of military glory. The memorial complex includes trenches and observation posts. Since it was declared a memorial it has been kept in the state it had during the war. Also there is a small open air museum of soviet and captured military equipment. The extensive area is covered with concrete square piles and 1419 poplars were planted stating a number of days the war had been lasting. The monument represents one of the parts of the memorial complex, created by sculpture V. E. Tsigal, architects J. B. Belopolsky, R. G. Kanin and V. I. Havin.
I like visiting this place and I think we must remember Soviet soldiers and be grateful to them for our happy life.
