Tver, Saltykov-Shchedrin’s Monument and The literary-memorial museum
Сизов Георгий Андреевич
Hello, my name is George. I am 16 and I study in Tver gymnasium 44. I would like to take part in the contest «Interactive Map of Russia».
The life and work of Saltykov-Shchedrin are closely connected with the Upper Volga. A lot has been done since the twentieth century to commemorate the great writer. The literary-memorial museum of Saltykov-Shchedrin was opened by the artist Yuri Kartselli by the 150th anniversary of the writer in 1976. It was officially given the status of the branch of Tver State United Historical, Architectural and Literary Museum. The museum is located in a stone house in Rybatskaya Street in the downtown area where Saltykov-Shchedrin had lived for two years (from 1860 to 1862) working as a Vice-governor of Tver. The museum exhibition includes more than 800 exhibits. The museum is the centre of city’s cultural life: besides exhibitions, literary gatherings, meetings and conferences are held there. Monument of the famous sculptor O.K. Komov was built in honour of Saltykov-Shchedrin in Tverskaya Square. One of the Tver’s central streets has his name.
As Vice-governor Mikhail Evgrafovich Saltykov-Shchedrin carried out an agrarian reform, struggled with lawlessness and arbitrariness of feudal landlords, defending the interests of farmers, workers and urban bourgeoisie. The "Tver period" in the life of Saltykov is rendered in his literary work. It can be found in many of his major works - "The Golovlevs", "Messrs and Mesdames Pompadour", "Poshekhonye old times," "Stories of a City" and, of course, "The Tales."
