The unofficial symbol of Voronezh
Безрукова Ольга Александровна
Our citizens honoured Peter the Great since olden times. At the turn of the 18th century Peter the Great found the town of Voronezh the best place to build the first Russian Flotilla for there were dense woods around the town, and the Voronezh River flew towards the Black Sea as now it does. So Voronezh can be called a cradle of the Russian National Fleet.
Now we have a monument to Peter the Great. It was built in 1860. The creator was A.E.Schwarz, the sculptor from Moscow. He used the posthumous mask of Peter I while creating the monument. During the war the monument was destroyed by the fascists and in 1956 a new monument was set up in Pelrovsky Garden.
Now Petrovsky garden is a favorite place of rest for our citizens. In August, 2009 the monument to Peter the Great in Petrovsky garden was chosen to be the unofficial symbol of Voronezh.
