Penza Is My Native Town
Зайцева Лилия Васильевна
My name is Ksenia. I live in Moscow, but I’d like to tell you about one interesting building in Svitino. It's a small village with an interesting history near Moscow. In 1654 there was Vorontsov's mansion with a park and a stable. In 1779 the Church of St.Maria was built there. It had the altar, a bell tower and a refectory (dining room). The church was decorated with a white stone and had a balcony and porticos, it is said to have been very beautiful. The Facade of the church was decorated with pilasters and a large dome had a golden cross.
I'd like to tell you a few words about my native town Penza. It is an old town. Its history dates back to the middle of the 17th century. It was founded in 1663 as a fortress to protect the south-eastern lands of Russia. At that time Penza was a small provincial town. In fact it had no industry of its own. There were only 26 streets in Penza. The majority of the population couldn't read.
In present days Penza is a large industrial, scientific and cultural centre with the population of over 500 thousand inhabitants. There are many industrial enterprises in Penza now. They produce machines and tools, bicycles and watches, clothing and furniture. These goods find a ready demand in our country. They are also exploited to many foreign lands.
Penza is a centre of education. Its universities, institutes, colleges and vocational schools attract thousands of young people who want to specialize in different spheres of technology, the sciences and the arts. There are many places of interest in our city. The Savitsky Picture Gallery containing a priceless collection of paintings attracts crowds of visitors from home and abroad. Tourists are also invited to the Museum of One Picture, the most popular one in Penza. The Folk Crafts Museum enables visitors to see works of folk decorative and applied art.
Penza is full of parks and green spaces. Belinsky Park is the largest park in our town and one of the favorite places of children and grown-ups. Penza has many squares, libraries, cinemas, stadiums. Our town is connected with the names of outstanding people (M. Lermontov, V. Belinsky, A. Radishchev are among them). Many monuments are erected in our town. From day to day Penza becomes more and more beautiful. We are proud of our native-town.
