The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, situated in the center of the Western Siberian lowland, takes up an area of 534,800 sq km, most of it being swampy, forest grown plains abounding in lakes and rivers. The Area is crossed by Western Siberia's two largest rivers, the Ob and its tributary, the lrtysh. The area's population is 1,369,600 of which indigenous ethnic groups-Khanty, Mansi, Nenets and Selkups-total over 30,000.
Two civilizations coexist on the territory of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area today. Represented by numerous oil derricks scattered all over the region which is the main oil-bearing area of the Russian Federation and accounts for more than a half of Russia's total oil output. Besides that, the Area is rated second in Russia in terms of natural gas reserves.
The other civilization is much less manifest today-for centuries, it has tried to harmonize with nature rather than to subdue it. The Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area is the home of ethnic communities with unique cultures and distinctive ways of life. The Khanty are the most numerous of them.
