Chernyakhovsk is situated in the central part of the Kaliningrad region. It is 89 km. from Kaliningrad. Chernyakhovsk is there, where the rivers Instruch and Angrapa form a source of the river Pregel. There are many gardens and parks with shady chestnuts, limes and maples. So it seems that you're in the nice botanical garden.
The town was founded in 1336 by German Teutonic Knights during the conquest of Prussia, as the castle Insterburg. The settlement was emerging near the city October 10, 1583 by the Margrave George Frederick of Prussia.
Insterburg was damaged during the bombing of the British aircraft in August 1944. It was stormed by Soviet troops in January 1945. Today the Insterburg castle is in ruins which are historical and architectural monuments of federal significance. The present name - Chernyakhovsk - the town received in 1946 in honor of Commander of the 3rd Belorussian Front, Army General Ivan Danilovich Chernyakhovsky, who died in February 1945 in the battle for East Prussia.
The main monument of Gen. Ivan Chernyakhovskiy was established May 9, 1977. Several years ago there was put an horse statue in honor of another commander - Barclay de Tolly, the hero of the War of 1812.
In Chernyakhovsk area in the village of Mayevka (formerly Georgenburg) there is an old stud farm of the XVIII century, which was revived in 2001. Every year in September there are international equestrian competitions in show jumping. The best riders in the world fight over a cup of stud farm "Georgenburg". It is important that the city museum after the name of I.D.Chernyahovsky is located in our school, which is constantly has excursions, meetings and conversations with interesting people.
