The Kursk Waterfall
Воротникова Мария Юрьевна
About 3 years ago, my father took me to the nearby village Matveevka for a picnic. While he was preparing barbeque, I decided to explore the countryside. Hardly had several minutes passed, when I saw amazing scenery – a powerful stream of water, falling from the seven-meter height, formed a breathtaking waterfall. I immediately showed that place to my Dad, and he was also struck by it. The sound of water was so strong, that we had to shout at the top of our voices to be heard. When we came back home, I was full of enthusiasm to find anything about that waterfall. It turns out, that the waterfall is not natural, it has a hydraulic structure, forming a pond and consisting of an earthen dam, spillway and bottom floodgates. In this way, water is discharged from the pond to avoid flooding houses of the nearby village Chaplygin. However, it really looks like a natural waterfall!
The length of the dam is 250 meters. It was constructed by the famous Kursk engineer Nicholas Fedorchenko and brought to life in 1983. Judging by the experts, the platform was easily built from the stone slabs, as the blocks. Nevertheless, it needs being under the constant care, as the stones gradually sink and seams are sapped by water.
Nowadays, the Matveevsky Fall is one of the most picturesque places in the Kursk region, and is known as the spectacular place for relaxation during hot summer days, where you can get a breath of fresh air. Still, this place isn’t overcrowded, and there is no stream of tourists with clicking cameras – only peace and quiet.
Even today, I visit this place, to remember sunny days spent with my father and to take pleasure from reigning silence.
