Orenburg governor N.A.Cryganovsky made an order to reconstruct the building in 1868. New rebuilt theatre with bigger stage and warm foyer opened in January 14, 1869. But the Theatre had a problem, it was attended by few people. In 1898 ion the stage of the theater jointly with Moscow Art Theatre the performance "The Seagull" by Chekhov was shown. In 1902 the Gorky Theatre staged a lot of performances by plays of Gorky. So In 1920 the theater performed a unique setting: the massive representation of "The siege of Orenburg Fortress by Yemelyan Pugachev". For the first time then the character of Pugachev was personalized. In 1932 the theatre was got the name of Maxim Gorky. Since the establishment of Soviet power the Orenburg Theatre had been actively working to improve actual repertoire. In 1930s many classic works were set, such as "Hamlet," "Romeo and Juliet," "Woe from Wit", "Inspector". From 1945 to 1949 a reconstruction of the Theatre building was carried out. In fact, in the same place a new Theatre was built. In 1955 and 1962 playd on tours in Moscow and in 1966 it was in Leningrade. Then about the performances of the theater such magazines as "Theatre" and "Theatrical Life" wrote articles and some metropolitan newspapers mentioned them too. Brilliant acting, beautiful settings, original repertoire were emphasized there. In the period from 1962 to 1970 the branch of Moscow Art Theatre School had been working in the Gorky Theatre. And thanks to it two groups of 27 actors were graduated. Among them were actors who linked their fate to the Gorky Theater for many years. Since 1997 the Theatre is headed by Rifcat Israfilov. In 2006 another renovation of the Theatre was hold. Today the Theatre hall can accommodate 426 spectators. It is very beautiful, modern and comfortable building where you want to return again and again!
