Petrozavodsk is the capital of Karelia. It was founded in 1703 in accordance with the Ukaz of Peter I. It is situated on the shore of the Petrozavodsk Bay of the lake Onego. The Niglinka river and Lososinka river cross the town. The first settlement was founded near factory and was called Petrovskaya sloboda. Since 1784 the town of Petrozavodsk became the center of Olonets province. The first Olonets governor was the famous Russian poet Gavriil Romanovitch Derzhavin. The Onego embankment is one of the main attractions in the city. The monument to Peter the Great is situated here. There are many sights of interest in Petrozavodsk. Kirov Square is an old center. A monument to Kirov is in the center of the square. Behind the monument to Kirov there is the building of the Musical and Russian drama theatres. On the left of the monument to Kirov is the museum of Fine Arts. The paintings by I.Kramskoy,V.Polenov are on display here. Petrozavodsk has several sister-cities. They are Varkaus, Duluth, La Rochell, Neubrandenburg and others. Karelia has a sister-state. It is Vermont. Near the State university there is a plague to symbolize friendship between Petrozavodsk and its sister-cities. Petrozavodsk is a port of 5 seas. Kukovka and Drevlyanka are new districts of Petrozavodsk. Petrozavodsk is a very beautiful city. The natural preserve Kivach is located not far from it. There is also the first Russian health resort, Martsialny Vody, founded by Peter the Great. Kizhi National Park Museum is located on Kizhi Island in Lake Onego. It was opened in 1959. If you came to Petrozavodsk, I advise you to visit Kizhi, Kivach and the health resort “Martial Waters.”
