The Vodlozero National Park is situated in the Republic of Karelia and the Archangel District covering an area of half a million hectares. It has a staff of trained experts and rangers who are ready to serve visitors. The administrative center of the Park is located in the village of Kuganavolok. It also has an office in Petrozavodsk and in Onega.
The Park was the first national park in the northen part of European Russia. It was established by decree of the government of the Russian Federation in 1991 to preserve the unique natural environment and cultural heritage of the Vodlozero area, to carry out scientific research, organize ecological education and tourism. Today the Park is a venue for international scientific expeditions, seminars, conferences and museum exhibitions. The Park also arranges summer camps for schoolchildren. The ancient traditions: folk festivals, songs and crafts are revived. The old churches are restored, chapels and holy crosses are erected in memory of the deserted villages. The guides and the rangers of the Park maintain the tourist centers, campsites, hiking trails and other facilities.
