KOMSOMOLSK-ON-AMUR – A TOWN OF YOUTH AND LABOUR
Коровкин Александр Николаевич
I live in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the second largest town of Khabarovsk Territory which is situated on the left bank of the Amur river. It is a beautiful and prosperous young town, its history tells us ‘how this severe land was vanquished’ 80 years ago.
In 1932, May 10, the Communist International and the Columbus ships came to the bank of the Amur river near the village Permskoye. They brought thousands of the first-builders of the future city. They were the Komsomol members from different cities of the Soviet Union – Rostov-on-Don, Leningrad, Smolensk and others, that’s how the name’ Komsomolsk’ appeared. The volunteers had to get acquainted with the territory of the wild taiga. Soviet citizens lived in barracks and army tents struggling with a fearful nature. Nevertheless, the city was growing rapidly. And in 1933 the first stone of the shipbuilding plant was laid. The heroic work of young builders came to fruition. In 1936 the first manufacturing enterprises were put into operation.
By the fifth anniversary of the town about 70,000 people could call themselves ‘komsomolchane’. And who those people were! One should mention that the prototype of Alexei Maresyev, the main character of "The Story of a Real Man"written by B. Polevoy, was one of the first builders of Komsomolsk. Quite a lot number of first-builders were killed during the Great Patriotic War. It should be noted that among the honored citizens of the town there is also Yuri Gagarin, whose name is seen in the name of Komsomolsk aircraft-building plant.
The city developed into a big center for many industries such as metallurgy, machinery, oil refining, and shipbuilding. It is also a very attractive destination for tourists. Many songs and poems are written about it. The hymn of the town is the song performed by Natalia Shturm.
